You Should Grow Java Plum

As a prepper, Food Farm enthusiast, exotic fruit lover, or herbalist, Java Plum (Syzygium cumini) is a valuable addition to your landscape, offering both practical and nutritional benefits. Here's some information on planting and growing a Java Plum tree, as well as its nutritional and medicinal properties.

Java Plum trees are said to have originated in India but they are also native to Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the Andaman Islands. They are related to guavas, feijoas and allspice. They grow fast and they usually fork into multiple trunks. They can grow up to 100 feet and live past 100 years. It will take them approximately 40 years to get to 100 feet in height. In the tropical regions it grows so easily that it can become an invasive plant.

Java plum leaves have a turpentine smell. When young they are pink and they mature in to aglossy dark green. They are filled with digestible magnesium, vitamin A, phosphorus and carbohydrates. That's what makes them great as livestock fodder.

  1. Planting and Growing Java Plum:

  • Climate and Soil:

Java Plum thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture.

  • Planting:

    • Select a sunny location and dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball. Place the tree

in the hole and backfill with soil, ensuring the tree is planted at the same depth as it was in the container. Water thoroughly after planting.

  • Care:

    • Provide regular watering during the establishment phase. Once established, Java Plum trees require minimal care. Pruning can be done to maintain shape and remove dead branches.

  1. Benefits of Growing Java Plum in Your Landscape:

  • Edible Fruit:

    • Java Plum produces small, purple-black fruits that are both delicious and nutritious.

The fruits can be consumed fresh or used in various culinary preparations, such as jams, jellies, and desserts.

  • Shade and Aesthetic Appeal:

    • The Java Plum tree provides ample shade, making it an excellent addition to your landscape. Its dense foliage and attractive, oval-shaped leaves add aesthetic beauty to your surroundings.

It's important to note that while Java Plum shows promise for various health benefits, it should not replace proper medical advice or treatment.
